Digital music production is an art form. Having this attitude towards it is very important as it completely transforms the result, by viewing it merely as a technical understanding (due to its now nearly entirely software based state) this detracts from its expressive and free flowing qualities. Gone are the days where studios consisted solely of highly expensive hardware based interfaces such as samplers, synths and other outboard equipment. Computer technology has undergone such massive and amazing advancements that an entire professional studio set up is often based from a single computer be it PC or Macintosh.
People often think this change will limit what can be achieved with production, however they are definitely misguided! The exact opposite is now true and Synthesis, sampling, mixing and editing have evolved to such an extent that there are literally no limits to what can be created.

The only thing holding people back from designing the sounds and arranging the tracks they desire is learning the software layout and its functions. Due to VST and RTAS technology, a plethora of plug-ins are available which perfectly emulate traditional instruments, essentially the entire ensemble of an orchestra can be reproduced with a single piece of software, on top of this there are Virtual Pianos, Organs and Saxophones that can be effortlessly applied to your tracks with little or no understanding of how they work or how to phisically play them.
